My husband, baby and I recently took a break from our daily routines to travel to Venezuela and visit my family and friends. While there we went on a car trip to Rio Caribe, Sucre state, my father's birthplace, in the far east of the country, to scatter his ashes as he himself had requested in his last days.
On the journey we stopped in Mochima to spend time with my sister and nephew. While there, one of my very best friends joined us with her husband and kids.
In the end, we spent a total of two weeks driving around, seeing old friends, sharing the joy and happiness of parenthood with old friends; looking at old photographs with grandma, eating and playing with Emma.
Although we are happy to be back in our safe haven here in Central Florida, I hold dear the moments we spent in my beloved and chaotic land. I ate the best the arepas, drank the best coffee and enjoyed the hearty laughter; I scanned the landscape of my childhood and adolescent memories; I remembered old boyfriends and admired the wild vegetation that extends everywhere while my entire being rejoiced in the Caracas weather, always between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius. Just perfect.
Although I did not have time to take any yoga classes (I have a good friend who teaches in many public spaces in Caracas), I did find time to meditate and practice asanas. This was usually late at night when everyone was asleep. These short practices helped me open up to all the experiences and stay focused at the same time.
I'm grateful for it all and I look forward to going back.
